Wales’ First Minister Rejects Official Dinner Invite with Donald Trump

Wales’ Leader Morgan refused an invitation to a state banquet featuring the US President at the royal residence

Wales’ top official Eluned Morgan declined a request to be present at an official dinner honoring US President Donald Trump at the historic castle.

The US leader arrived in London Tuesday night with First Lady Melania for his second state visit to Britain.

A government spokesperson stated that Morgan wished to be with fellow lawmakers during an incredibly difficult time following the recent passing of an assembly representative.

On Wednesday, an official source clarified that an informal gathering was scheduled involving Morgan and fellow MSs following the loss.

Opposition Senedd leader Darren Millar called the move as “deliberate disregard” that would be seen poorly across the US labeling it “deeply regrettable”.

He emphasized that Wales ought to have been present during the significant occasion, stating how other ministers might have attended in her place.

Based on government analysis, America ranks as one of the largest export markets to Wales, even if the EU remains the top partner overall.

Earlier this year, the First Minister cautioned that the country could be harder hit by potential American import taxes due to its heavy dependence on goods exports.

Trade discussions on the removal of tariffs on UK steel remain on hold, with American representatives voicing concern over upcoming changes in production.

While she had previously praised the president for his re-election and stressed the value of US–Wales ties, in the past previously described him using terms like “off-the-scale crazy” in a public appearance.

The reply to the royal invite, Morgan reportedly expressed to thank the King stressing that her focus was being with colleagues during a tough time.

Morgan is among several high-profile leader who rejected the banquet. Liberal Democrat leader Davey had earlier stated his intention to boycott the dinner regarding conditions abroad.

In contrast, the Scottish leader announced participation at the royal event.

Meanwhile, Plaid Cymru figures publicly criticized the move to welcome the president with full state honors, warning that it could strengthen extremism both domestically as well as internationally.
