The tech giant Says More Than 1,800 North Korean Employment Attempts Have Been Thwarted

A senior official from the e-commerce and tech behemoth has announced that the corporation prevented more than 1,800 employment submissions from people believed to be North Korean agents.

Online Job Schemes Aimed at Tech Roles

According to the statement, these applicants attempted to secure work-from-home IT positions by employing compromised or fraudulent documents.

"Their goal is often straightforward: get hired, earn a salary, and send income back to support the regime's weapons initiatives," the official stated.

He added that this practice is likely to be taking place extensively across the industry, particularly in the United States.

Rising Applications and Sophisticated Tactics

The company reported a nearly 33% increase in such submissions from suspected DPRK sources in the previous 12 months.

The individuals typically collaborate with individuals operating so-called "computer clusters" – which are devices actually situated in the US but managed remotely.

To address this, the firm relied on a combination of AI tools and manual screening by its team to examine employment requests.

Evolving Fraudulent Strategies

The methods used by these bad actors have grown more complex.

  • Hijacking unused professional profiles with stolen passwords to gain credibility.
  • Targeting genuine software engineers to seem trustworthy.
  • Encouraging other companies to report questionable activity to the authorities.

Hiring managers were warned to be alert to warning signs such as incorrectly listed phone numbers and discrepant education backgrounds.

Broader Government Actions

In recent months, US law enforcement uncovered dozens of illegal "laptop farms" running across the country.

According to the announcement, these operations used stolen identities of American citizens to assist DPRK nationals secure positions.

A number of American facilitators who assisted in securing these roles were also indicted.

In a related case, a woman from Arizona was sentenced to more than eight years in jail for running a comparable scheme that earned millions in illicit gains for herself and the Pyongyang regime.
