Oxford Union Future Leader Ousted Following Conservative Activist Comments
The future president of the Oxford Union has been ousted from office after failing a vote of confidence that followed his disputed online comments about the conservative activist.
The motion against George Abaraonye reached the required super-majority to remove him from office, according to an statement from the organization.
Contentious Posts
The controversy began after the student reportedly posted messages on social media that seemed to celebrate the death of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a college in Utah.
According to sources, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.
The student leader is also reported to have written in a messaging group with other members seeming to express approval of the event.
Vote Outcome
The vote of confidence took place over the recent days, with results revealed on Tuesday.
Official notices indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting removal, while 501 were against the motion.
The notice confirmed that the president-elect was considered to have stepped down in accordance with the society's regulations.
Procedural Disputes
Voting operations were informally suspended early on Monday after the election official was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.
In a response, the student asserted that the count had been stopped because election administrators believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His response unequivocally denied that any representative appointed by the student had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.
Ongoing Dispute
The president-elect stated that significant concerns had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he remained the elected leader.
His comment added that George was "proud and thankful to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of university members" who voted to have a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Opponents have said that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the society has prioritized politics over principles".
External Responses
On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an open letter to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.
The message accused the union of becoming a place where "student leaders openly applaud the killing of a political opponent".
The communication warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, supporters would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever graced the union's chamber and urge them never again to lend their name".
The Oxford Union had previously condemned the student's remarks after the activist's killing and stated that concerns submitted about him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The student leader had been one of multiple members to debate with the activist at the union in spring.
