Nvidia CEO Voices Frustration Regarding Alleged Chinese Semiconductor Import Ban
The head of Nvidia has stated that he is "let down" by reports indicating that Chinese authorities has ordered its major tech firms to stop purchasing the company’s artificial intelligence processors.
Jensen Huang added that he plans to be "understanding" in responding to this move by the Chinese cyberspace authority.
"There are a lot of places we can't go to, and that's fine," he informed reporters on Wednesday.
The semiconductor leader, which previously faced a restriction on selling its top-tier chips to the Chinese market, had witnessed that limitation overturned this summer.
As part of a recent deal, the company must pay 15% of its China-based revenue to the US government.
That same day, reports emerged that China’s internet regulator had allegedly directed tech companies to halt use of Nvidia chips developed specifically for the Chinese audience.
Shares of the American company dropped by more than 1% in premarket trading.
The CEO emphasized that he would "stand by American policies" as they attempt to address international challenges, and would express the identical message if asked during meetings later.
The firm earlier this year achieved status as the pioneering company globally to surpass a $4tn valuation.
Its chips are central to the global AI boom, powering server farms across the world.
The Chinese government, however, aims to rival US leadership in artificial intelligence and has been creating domestic semiconductors as part of its wider technology strategy.
Leading Chinese companies such as Alibaba had previously purchased the company’s chips prior to the new import restriction.
Nvidia was among several US technology firms that announced funding in the United Kingdom as part of a joint tech pact.
This involves providing processors for the a major computing facility scheduled to launch in the UK, in collaboration with Arm.
