Life in the Sights of China’s So-Called Guam Killer Missiles

Similar to many locals of Guam, Jacqueline Guzman is familiar to hearing about potential threats from China. Amid escalating tensions in the Pacific region, a lot of residents prioritize economic pressures instead of military aggression.

The resident states that her primary worry is covering expenses, and she expresses trust in the US government to provide her protection.

Yet that sense of certainty shifted recently when reports emerged of a high-profile display in China, where advanced military hardware was unveiled—among them a missile referred to as the Pacific-range weapon by state press.

Additionally, the appearance of the Chinese leader alongside the top officials of Russia, Pyongyang, Iran and allied states indicated a concerning international bloc that various see as a potential danger.

“From what I’ve read, almost everyone in the Pacific needs to be worried,” says a local resident, in his seventies, who is located close to the headquarters of the Guam national guard.

“However we have nothing residents can change.”

Located roughly 1,800 miles from China, Guam serves as a key strategic hub for the United States in the Pacific Ocean and hosts a major armed contingent. Analysts note that if China seek to annex Taiwan, the island would probably become a key battleground in any subsequent war.

Consequently, exhibitions of China’s growing defense prowess—such as nuclear-capable weapons, electronic warfare tools and autonomous platforms—draw attention across Guam.

“This territory is a essential operational site for the US in the Pacific region,” explains a public affairs officer for the regional military command.

She notes that the zone is among the most ‘important’ for national defense and that armed services are “equipped to protect our US homeland here on Guam.”

With that in mind, the United States is developing an upgraded protection system intended to offer 360-degree coverage for the territory. Per a official statement, the $1.5bn initiative is scheduled to be finished within a decade.

“The public must be aware of the risk, although not extremely anxious,” says a retired defense analyst, pointing out that China’s armed services have surpassed the United States in various capabilities.

“In the event that China select their moment and objectives wisely… they could seriously harm US forces,” the expert warns.

Even so, the expert argues that the US military continues to be formidable and more than a match for Beijing’s new weaponry.

Along with the ballistic systems, the sight of China’s leader positioned with the representatives of Pyongyang and Moscow at the display prompted fresh anxiety among several in Guam.

One resident states that she earlier was not worried about Beijing—before the “group photo” of Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong-un and Xi Jinping. It, she notes, signals “stronger political ties and mutual support” among the countries.

“It can alter international relations and make joint operations more feasible. It’s concerning because it may signal a strategic partnership,” the specialist comments.

Local officials, on the other hand, continue to assert that defending the island is of paramount importance to the US military.

Guam senator a committee chair, who leads the government body, says that the island leadership receives defense reports from federal representatives and that the security of the region is handled “very seriously.”

“Residents’ responsibility is to be composed, informed and together, confident that the right mechanisms are operational to ensure our protection.”
