EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
