According to a newly revealed deal, subscribers of OpenAI's Sora video generation app will soon be able to watch personal likenesses interacting with iconic characters from Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars and beloved animated classics.
Imagine yourself, Lightning McQueen and Iron Man all dancing together in the notorious Star Wars bar.
This tool represents an AI platform created by OpenAI that enables creators to generate video clips of around 20 seconds through brief written descriptions. Previously, the startup had attempted to restrict Sora's generated content from using unlicensed copyrighted material, though with mixed results, leading to lawsuit threats from rights holders.
A Major Investment & Licensing Deal
As part of the agreement, Disney revealed it will invest $one billion dollars in OpenAI. Furthermore, it will grant rights to about 200 of its most iconic characters—from R2-D2 to Stitch—for integration within the Sora app.
Addressing The Industry's Concerns
The deal comes at a period of significant concern in the entertainment industry regarding AI's effect on the jobs of creative professionals. Disney emphasized that its agreement with OpenAI does not include the licensing for talent likenesses or voices.
Rather, the collaboration was framed as an unprecedented chance to give power to audiences. The partners envision a future of user-created AI clips, akin to taking an AI-generated version with Princess Jasmine at a theme park.
Bob Iger, Disney's CEO, stated that the partnership would place creative power" directly into the hands of Disney fans like never before.
Potential for Wide Viewership
These fan-made creations may even achieve wide viewership, with select videos potentially being displayed on the company's flagship platform. This strategy appears intended to rival the endless streams of platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts, which already often include clips from popular TV shows and movies.
