A Tooth Fairy Tale Film Analysis: Cartoon Journey with a Touch of Family-Friendly Preteen Romance
Throughout this cartoon journey aimed at tweens, the fairy community is dedicated to gathering teeth from sleeping youngsters and placing gold beneath where they sleep. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He’s only slightly more interested in the financial workings of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who supply gold in exchange. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the ugly gnome he had imagined.
An Unlikely Bond and Shared Threat
The stage is set for an adventure with a light sprinkling of young love (though it’s very much suitable for children). The goblin and fairy communities are estranged from one another, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to unite beings together. Both groups as seen here are incredibly similar, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the other. Fairies are said to be self-centered types, prone to stealing anything they want, while the goblins are allegedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and backward, but are actually bright and technologically advanced.
Of course, this scenario needs a shared foe to join forces against, and this is duly provided in the form of a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush with these guys: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they serve as fairly bloodthirsty, if not especially competent, villains.
Target Audience and Overall Impression
You won’t find very many children’s animations aimed at the kind of audience that is starting to experience first crushes, but aren’t yet mature enough for whatever teenagers view these days in lieu of popular teen sagas. If your child is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to become their new all-time fave, but you could do worse.
A Tooth Fairy Tale releases in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and across the United Kingdom from 24 October.
